Zamfara State witnessed unprecedented jubilation as Governor Dauda Lawal’s victory was reaffirmed by the Supreme Court, overturning the Court of Appeal’s prior inconclusive election declaration. Thousands of supporters gathered in the capital city of Gusau, creating a festive atmosphere that brought the city to a standstill. Governor Lawal’s convoy, riding in an open van called the Bazamfara, moved through various areas, including Tsafe LGA, Kwatarkwashi, and Damba, before reaching the ‘Freedom Square’ in Gusau.
The spontaneous celebration, lasting over 10 hours, featured a mammoth crowd dancing, singing political songs, and waving placards expressing joy over the Supreme Court’s decision. Governor Lawal, during his speech at Freedom Square, commended the judiciary for upholding the truth and expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for non-interference in the electoral process. He highlighted the significance of the decision, reigniting hope for an independent judiciary and promising continued efforts in addressing security challenges, as well as advancements in education, health, agriculture, the economy, and other crucial sectors.
Governor Lawal also took the opportunity to rename the square, previously used as their campaign venue due to challenges faced during the previous administration, as ‘Freedom Square.’ The governor emphasized the importance of this symbolic act and thanked the people for their unwavering support throughout the legal proceedings. The news reflects not only the legal triumph but also the overwhelming enthusiasm and support from the people for their leader’s reaffirmed victory.
