In an unprecedented move, the Global Peace Foundation, a non-governmental organization (NGO), has left Plateau women in a state of bewilderment by providing financial literacy training to 100 women and gifting them a substantial N500,000 each to kickstart cooperative societies and establish businesses. The surprising initiative was revealed by Rev. Ruben Hayab, the Country Director of Global Peace Foundation Nigeria, during a recent event in Jos. He explained that this initiative, conducted in collaboration with the Christian, Rural and Urban Development Association of Nigeria, aims not only to empower women economically but also to foster social cohesion and religious tolerance.
The training and empowerment program took place in the communities of Rahwol Kanan and Angwan Doki, both situated in Jos South Local Government Area. These locations were deliberately chosen due to their history of religious conflicts. According to Mr. Hayab, the initiative was born out of the realization that poverty was a significant contributor to conflict. The NGO focused on promoting financial literacy among women, forming them into cooperative societies to encourage unity across religious divides. The ultimate goal is for these women to actively participate in discussions about their businesses, contribute to conflict resolution, and advocate for peace in their communities.
Mr. Hayab emphasized the importance of the voice of women in peace-building, stating that women, with their unique ability to connect with various members of society, play a crucial role in achieving positive results in dialogues. Beyond the empowerment and training, the Global Peace Foundation extended its impact by providing desks and science equipment to two schools in the area, aiming to promote quality education and advocate messages of unity and peaceful coexistence. This strategic move is part of the NGO’s broader mission to address the root causes of conflicts and promote lasting peace in Nigeria.
