In a surprising turn of events, the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria (SCSN) has delivered a scathing critique of the Muslim-Muslim ticket presented by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2023 elections. Expressing disappointment in the perceived lack of positive changes, the organization, which previously endorsed the same-faith ticket, highlighted its concerns about the administration led by President Bola Tinubu. Despite substantial support during the elections, the SCSN contends that the promised dividends of democracy have not materialized over the past seven months.
The verdict was declared by Sheikh AbdurRasheed Hadiyyatullah, the President of SCSN, during a National Conference in Abuja themed “Matters Arising From 2023 Election and Associated Socio-Economic Challenges.” Hadiyyatullah, in an interview with journalists, voiced the organization’s disappointment, emphasizing the deteriorating economic conditions in Nigeria. He revealed that the council had played a role in the success of the Muslim-Muslim ticket but regretted the lack of progress, unemployment escalation, and the rising cost of living experienced by Nigerians.
Citing a myriad of issues, Hadiyyatullah called for the resignation of ministers allegedly not working in the nation’s best interest. He expressed concern about corruption within the government, stating, “Some of the Ministers are siphoning and looting the treasury,” and urged for a change in leadership to address the challenges faced by the country. The Sheikh concluded by emphasizing the council’s sympathy with the government but asserted that the way forward required honest individuals committed to the nation’s progress and not engaged in corruption.
