The Senate is set to summon Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), over the escalating kidnapping crisis, as disclosed by Senator Ireti Kingibe, the representative for the FCT. Speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Kingibe expressed concerns about the surge in insecurity in Abuja, particularly the rise in abduction cases.
She outlined plans for the Senate FCT committee to engage with Wike and heads of security agencies upon resumption. Kingibe emphasized the need for them to present their security plans for the capital, stressing Wike’s responsibility as the chief security officer of the FCT.
Kingibe acknowledged the efforts of security agencies but called for more decisive action to address the root causes of insecurity. She noted that simply apprehending kidnappers addresses the symptom, not the underlying issues.
In 2022, the FCT witnessed 194 attacks resulting in 69 fatalities and 152 abductions, as reported by media sources and Beacon Consulting, a prominent indigenous intelligence outfit. Kingibe urged a comprehensive approach to tackle the security challenges in the nation’s capital.
