You Are Still Part Of Us’, ECOWAS Rejects Exit Of Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso

ECOWAS, the Economic Community of West African States, finds itself in the midst of a significant upheaval as three of its member states – Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso – have announced their intention to withdraw from the regional bloc. The decision came suddenly, with the military juntas of these nations declaring their exit with immediate effect. This move follows tensions within ECOWAS, particularly after the military takeover in Niger.

Under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, ECOWAS had issued warnings of potential military action if the Niger junta failed to transfer power back to civilian rule. However, the regime remained defiant, with Mali and Burkina Faso pledging support to Niger in the face of external pressure.

In response to the withdrawal announcement, the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja issued a communique stating that it had not received any formal notification from the three member states regarding their intent to leave the community. Despite this, the Commission reiterated its commitment to working with the affected countries to restore constitutional order.
