The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) chapter in Jigawa State has rebuffed the State Government’s proposal to grant a ₦10,000 wage increase to civil servants.
This decision was articulated in a joint statement issued by the chairpersons and secretaries of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Joint Public Service Negotiation Council following an emergency meeting held in Dutse.
The statement underscored the assertion that the state government’s action contravened the terms agreed upon during negotiations between the organized Labour and the State Government.
It further elucidated that no formal agreement or memorandum of understanding had been endorsed by the Organised Labour with the State Government concerning the ₦10,000 salary increment over a three-month period.
As articulated in the statement: “Organised Labour expressed disappointment at the government’s announcement, deeming it a misrepresentation of the earlier consensus reached between the state government’s committee and the labour union on this matter.”
“Per the agreement, the state government had committed to providing all civil servants with a ₦10,000 salary increase for a duration of six months, starting from October 2023 until March 2024, coinciding with the anticipated implementation of the new minimum wage for workers.”
“Furthermore, the agreement also sought the facilitation of Agricultural loans for interested civil servants and the provision of other relief measures, including the allocation of food items through the state emergency management agency for distribution to workers’ unions.”
The Labour union remained steadfast in its stance, reiterating that no formal agreement had been concluded before the State Government announced the ₦10,000 wage increment for a mere three months.
