Kano Assembly Pressured: Reinstatement of Ex-Emir Sanusi Sparks Debate

A group known as “Yan Dangwalen Jihar Kano” (the Kano Electorate) has approached the Kano State Assembly, urging a reevaluation of the legislation that established four additional emirates in Gaya, Rano, Karaye, and Bichi during the previous administration. This move follows the signing of the emirate law by the former governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, on December 5, 2019, which coincided with its unanimous passage by state legislators. However, just three months after the establishment of these new emirates, the then Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, was dethroned by the governor and subsequently banished to Awe in Nasarawa State.

In response, the deposed Emir challenged his banishment in court and eventually relocated to Lagos after a court ruled the banishment unlawful. Recent speculations suggest a potential reinstatement of the ex-Emir and the dissolution of the additional emirates, purportedly established to diminish his influence. Following a victory for the governor at the Supreme Court in January, hints emerged from the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Rabiu Kwankwaso, suggesting a review of the emirate law. This speculation seems to have materialized with the emergence of a pressure group, “Yan Dangwalen Jihar Kano,” which penned a letter dated February 5, 2024, addressed to the speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly.

The letter implores the assembly to revisit the legislation governing the additional emirates and consider their potential dissolution, advocating for the reinstatement of Mr. Sanusi as Emir of Kano. The group argues that such actions would promote unity, peace, and stability within Kano State and its neighboring communities. Citing Mr. Sanusi’s previous contributions to the well-being and development of Kano State during his tenure as Emir, the group emphasizes his potential to restore unity and harmony if reinstated. They further highlight his extensive knowledge, experience, and connections, underscoring the potential benefits of his reinstatement to both Kano State and Nigeria as a whole.
