Kano University Suspends Lecturer for Administering Corporal Punishment on Students

The Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology in Wudil, Kano, has taken decisive action following a disturbing incident involving a lecturer and students.

In a recent video that circulated widely on social media, a lecturer at the university was seen employing corporal punishment on students within a lecture hall, sparking significant public outcry and condemnation.

Responding promptly to the situation, the university’s Deputy Registrar for the Information and Public Relations Unit, Sai’du Abdullahi Nayaya, announced on Tuesday that the implicated lecturer has been suspended pending further investigation and disciplinary proceedings.

This decision comes after a petition was submitted by Kano-based lawyer Abba Hikima, highlighting the severity of the incident and the urgent need for action.

Nayaya emphasized the university’s commitment to ensuring the welfare and safety of its students, stating that any form of misconduct or violation of students’ rights will not be tolerated.

In a statement titled “Re: Viral video on student maltreatment,” Nayaya affirmed, “The management of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, immediately queried and suspended the staff in question and forwarded the case to the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee for further action.”

“The management is dedicated to providing conducive learning conditions for students, and such incidents will be thoroughly investigated to uphold the integrity and values of the institution,” Nayaya added.
