Senate Summons Economic Team, Prepares to Question Service Chiefs on Wednesday

The Senate has announced its intention to question the Service Chiefs on Wednesday and Thursday regarding the nation’s security challenges.

Senator Tokunbo Abiru, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions, disclosed this postponement while addressing journalists on Tuesday. The planned interface with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, was rescheduled to Friday to accommodate the sessions with the Service Chiefs.

Last week, the Senate passed a resolution summoning the Service Chiefs to provide explanations on the escalating security situation in the country. Additionally, the Committee on Banking summoned the CBN Governor to discuss the state of the nation’s economy and the free flow of the Naira.

Despite gathering for the scheduled interface with the CBN Governor, the Committee decided to postpone it to Friday due to the ongoing engagement of the Governor and other economic managers with the House of Representatives.

Senator Abiru explained, “We would have fixed Wednesday or Thursday for the interface, but the Senate has allocated these days for critical engagement with the Service Chiefs. Therefore, we have scheduled the interface with the CBN Governor for Friday at 9 am.”

The Senate also held closed-door sessions earlier in the day, followed by a motion from Senator Ahmad Lawan regarding the passing of Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim. They observed a minute of silence for the deceased and formed a nine-man delegation for a condolence visit to the Governor of Yobe State and the family of the deceased, led by Senator Adamu Aliero (PDP Kebbi Central).
