BREAKING: NLC, TUC Issue Deadline For Nationwide Strike, Warn FG

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have jointly issued a 14-day national strike notice to the federal government.

Both unions expressed disappointment over the non-implementation of the 16-point agreement reached with the federal government on October 2, 2023.

In a statement, the national leadership of the TUC and NLC conveyed their dismay at the government’s apparent indifference to the widespread suffering and adversity in the nation, despite their efforts to uphold industrial peace.

The statement read: “The October 2nd agreement aimed to alleviate the significant suffering and adverse socioeconomic effects caused by the poorly conceived and executed IMF/World Bank-induced hike in the price of PMS and the devaluation of the naira. As predicted, these dual policies have had dire economic consequences for the masses and workers of Nigeria.”

The unions further expressed regret at being compelled to take such measures but emphasized that the persistent neglect of citizens’ welfare and the widespread hardship have left them with no alternative.

“In light of these circumstances and recognizing the urgency of the situation, as well as the imperative of safeguarding the rights and dignity of Nigerian workers and citizens, the NLC and TUC hereby issue a stern ultimatum to the Federal Government to fulfill its obligations within 14 days starting from tomorrow, the 9th day of February 2024.”
