AFCON: Don’t Watch Super Eagles Final if You’re hypertensive – Ex-commissioner

In light of recent incidents during football matches, including the semi-final match between Nigeria and South Africa, Mr. Remi Omowaiye, a former Osun State Commissioner for Works, has advised Nigerians with hypertension to exercise caution while watching high-stress events like the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.

Expressing concern over reports of fatalities attributed to shock during intense football matches, Omowaiye emphasized the need for individuals with hypertension to prioritize their health. He recounted his own experience of extreme emotional distress during critical moments of the semi-final match and indicated his decision to avoid watching the final live.

Omowaiye urged the Nigeria Football Federation to acknowledge and pay tribute to those who lost their lives while watching the matches, underscoring the importance of honoring their memory.

He stated, “It is imperative that we mourn the tragic loss of lives during such events. My heartfelt advice to fellow Nigerians, especially those managing hypertension, is to prioritize their well-being. I strongly recommend they refrain from watching the final match live and opt for viewing replays after the match has concluded.”

The former commissioner highlighted incidents where individuals suffered health complications or even fatalities during the semi-final match and emphasized the potential risks associated with high-stress situations for those with pre-existing health conditions.

Nigeria and host nation Cote D’Ivoire are scheduled to face off in the AFCON final on Sunday, with heightened attention on ensuring the safety and well-being of all viewers, particularly those susceptible to the adverse effects of intense sporting events.
