The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), led by President-General and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has called upon Muslims across Nigeria to anticipate the sighting of the crescent moon marking the start of Sha’aban 1445AH after sunset on Saturday, the 29th of Rajab, 1445AH (February 10, 2024), in preparation for the upcoming Ramadan fasting period.
In a statement issued on Friday, Professor Salisu Shehu, the Deputy Secretary-General of the NSCIA, emphasized the significance of observing the lunar calendar, particularly regarding the onset of Ramadan.
Shehu highlighted that despite the occurrence of the conjunction, the moon’s visibility is subject to various factors and may appear later than expected.
The announcement underscores the importance of moon sighting traditions in determining the commencement of religious events, emphasizing the community’s role in the observation process.
The NSCIA’s directive serves to unite Muslims in Nigeria in anticipation of Ramadan, fostering a sense of communal preparation and spiritual readiness for the holy month ahead.
