President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to screen and confirm five individuals recently appointed as directors of the board of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The announcement of Tinubu’s request came through a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during the plenary session on Tuesday.
The appointed board directors include Robert Agbide, Ado Wanga, Murtala Sagaley, Urom Eke, and Olayinka Aliyu. In the letter addressed to the Senate, Tinubu cited compliance with the provisions outlined in section 6(1a) and section 10(1)(2) of the CBN Act, 2007, as the basis for his request.
“In compliance with the provision of section 6(1a) of the section 10(1)(2) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Establishment Act 2007,” Tinubu wrote, “I am pleased to present for confirmation by the senate the appointments of the underlisted five persons as directors of the board of the CBN.”
The move by Tinubu follows recent developments within the CBN, including the appearance of CBN governor, Olayemi Cardoso, before the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions. During the session, Cardoso addressed inquiries regarding inflation, foreign exchange dynamics, and other pertinent issues impacting the Nigerian economy.
Accompanying the CBN governor were key government officials, including the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu. These appearances underscore the collaborative efforts between the executive and legislative branches in overseeing critical sectors of the Nigerian economy and ensuring effective governance.
