Private Sector, States Challenge NLC’s ₦1 Million Minimum Wage Proposal

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)’s call for a ₦1 million minimum wage has sparked debates among stakeholders, with the private sector and various states expressing skepticism over its feasibility.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, highlighted the impact of currency devaluation and inflation on the proposed wage during a recent interview, stressing the need for a wage that reflects the cost of living.

However, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammed, emphasized the government’s commitment to making a rational decision considering national interests and economic constraints.

Several states, including Ekiti, Sokoto, and Benue, questioned the practicality of the ₦1 million wage demand, citing limited resources and economic realities. They urged for realistic negotiations based on prevailing economic conditions.

While acknowledging workers’ challenges, state representatives emphasized the importance of sustainable wage structures aligned with economic capabilities.

Industry associations, such as the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA) and Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), called for comprehensive discussions grounded in economic analysis and cooperation among stakeholders.

Amidst these deliberations, all parties anticipate constructive engagement within the framework of the 37-man minimum wage negotiation committee, emphasizing the importance of patience and evidence-based decision-making for the welfare of Nigerian workers and economic stability.
