Breaking: President Tinubu appoints new DG

President Bola Tinubu has forwarded a request to the Senate seeking confirmation for the appointment of Dr. Kelechi Ohiri as the Director-General of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). The request was conveyed through a letter addressed to the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpiabio, and was read during the plenary session on Wednesday. In the letter, President Tinubu cited Section 40, subsection one of the National Health Insurance Authority Act 2022, highlighting the legal basis for the appointment. He expressed his pleasure in presenting Dr. Kelechi Ohiri for confirmation, emphasizing the importance of the role in leading the NHIA. President Tinubu concluded the letter by expressing hope for the Senate’s expeditious consideration of the appointment.

Following the reading of the letter, President Akpiabio referred the request to the Senate Committees on Health for further legislative scrutiny and input. The committees were tasked with conducting a thorough review of Dr. Kelechi Ohiri’s qualifications and suitability for the position of Director-General of the NHIA. They are expected to report back to the plenary session within one week with their findings and recommendations. This procedural step ensures that the appointment process adheres to legislative protocols and allows for comprehensive evaluation before a final decision is made.
