Confusion as two APC gov’ship candidates emerge in Edo

Confusion gripped Benin City, Edo State’s capital, on Saturday as the 2024 All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election witnessed the emergence of two candidates, escalating tensions amidst a disrupted voting process and a violent attack by suspected political thugs.

Governor Hope Uzodinma, leading the APC Governorship Primary Election Committee, initially declared Hon. Dennis Idahosa as the victor, securing 40,453 votes in the direct primary election, surpassing 11 other aspirants. However, amidst the chaos, officials from the National Working Committee (NWC) relocated and announced Senator Monday Okpebholo as the winner, citing his 12,145 votes. This conflicting declaration underscored deep divisions within the party, further exacerbated by the assertion of Edo State APC’s publicity secretary, Peter Igbinigie, who emphasized the authority of the Dr Stanley Ugboajah-led committee as the legitimate returning officer, challenging Uzodinma’s unilateral declaration.

The disputed outcome highlights the challenges facing the APC in Edo State, with accusations of misinformation regarding the primary election venue adding fuel to the controversy.
