Senate President Godswill Akpabio suggested on Sunday that the federal government is struggling to decide which charges to level against Godwin Emefiele, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), due to the multitude of allegations against him.
Akpabio made these comments during a thanksgiving service organized by Barinada Mpigi, senator representing Rivers south-east senatorial district.
He attributed the prevailing economic hardship to past policies and actions, without specifying the individuals responsible.
Akpabio acknowledged the challenges faced by Nigerians, urging patience while assuring that the current administration is committed to fulfilling its campaign promises.
“We’re facing challenges, including hunger and insecurity, but we campaigned for this job and won’t let you down,” he said.
Akpabio emphasized the need for patience in addressing the deep-rooted issues Nigeria has faced over many years.
The event, held in Koroma, Tai LGA of Rivers, was attended by various dignitaries, including Dave Umahi, minister of works, and Martin Amaewhule, speaker of the Rivers house of assembly.
Background:
Emefiele was suspended on June 9, 2023, by President Bola Tinubu, who ordered a probe into his tenure as governor of the apex bank.
He was subsequently arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) and arraigned on charges of illegal possession of firearms.
On November 8, Emefiele was granted bail after spending 151 days in detention.
On January 18, the federal government amended the criminal charges against him, increasing them to 20 counts, including alleged breach of trust, forgery, and procurement fraud.
