Insecurity: Former Aide to Buhari Calls for Abolishing Civil Defence, Road Safety

Senator Ita Enang, a former lawmaker in the 7th National Assembly and ex-presidential aide, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider abolishing the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

Enang made this statement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme.

Advocating for the establishment of state police, Enang argued that maintaining both NSCDC and FRSC only adds unnecessary complexity to the country’s security apparatus.

He suggested reassigning personnel from these agencies to their respective states to bolster state police forces.

Enang also proposed integrating state-owned security outfits like Amotekun and Ebube-Agu into the state police framework.

Highlighting the urgency of the situation, he urged President Tinubu to expedite the process by directing the Attorney General of the Federation to draft an executive bill for the establishment of state police and submit it to the National Assembly for immediate consideration.

“We cannot afford to delay this critical matter by waiting for the completion of the constitutional amendment process. It should be treated as a priority,” he emphasized.

Enang emphasized that the executive bill should clearly delineate the roles and limitations of state police compared to federal police.

While acknowledging his previous concerns about potential abuse by state governors, Enang stressed that creating state police is now imperative to address security challenges such as banditry and kidnapping in Nigeria.

“The time has come for us to embrace the idea of state police voluntarily. Our security challenges, including the food crisis, demand swift action,” he concluded.
