The Nigeria Customs Service has announced plans to begin the direct distribution of seized food items to Nigerians in response to the country’s critical food security challenges and the high cost of essential food items.
The National Public Relations Officer of the service, Abdullahi Maiwada, stated that the items would be certified fit for consumption before distribution.
This decision comes amidst recent protests against the high cost of living in the country, which has been exacerbated by an ongoing economic crisis.
The Customs Service aims to alleviate the hardships faced by Nigerians by ensuring equitable distribution of the food items nationwide.
The modalities for the distribution will be communicated through NCS formations nationwide, with a commitment to transparency, fairness, and public safety.
The service has also launched an anti-smuggling operation to prevent the unlawful exportation of vital food resources.
The Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, reiterated the service’s commitment to President Bola Tinubu’s food security agenda, emphasizing the NCS’s dedication to serving the best interests of Nigerians and fostering economic stability.
