Efforts to combat smuggling received a boost as the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kano Area Command, intercepted four trucks loaded with food items.
In a statement by NCS spokesman Saidu Nuradeen on Tuesday, the Service revealed that its personnel intercepted the vehicles carrying a substantial quantity of food items intended for illegal export along the Hadejia – Taura – Ringim axis in Jigawa.
The seized items include 1,505 cartons of assorted dried fish, 17 bags of local rice, and two bags of beans.
Nuradeen emphasized that the seizure underscores the NCS’s continuous efforts to enforce the border closure policy, aimed at safeguarding the nation’s economy and ensuring food security.
He highlighted the risks posed by smuggling to public health and the government’s revenue, reaffirming the NCS’s commitment to combat such activities across all entry points into the country.
Nuradeen urged the public to provide credible information to aid in stemming smuggling activities while reiterating the NCS’s dedication to protecting local industries and enhancing food security.
In a separate development, Assistant Comptroller General of Customs, IQ Ibudu, urged the Maigatari border community to remain vigilant and adhere to the land border closure directives from ECOWAS.
She emphasized the government’s proactive measures to address social and economic challenges and urged border communities to collaborate with the Service and other security agencies to safeguard border posts.
Controller of Kano/Jigawa Area Command, Dauda Ibrahim Chana, assured border communities of the Service’s commitment to addressing their needs, particularly in community relations.
