Niger Remains Outside, Will Never Return To ECOWAS, Coup Leader Affirms

Abdourahamane Tchiani, leader of Niger’s military junta, reaffirms the country’s stance to stay out of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

In an interview with the RTN news channel in Niamey, Tchiani emphasized that none of the Sahel nations, including Niger, would consider rejoining ECOWAS.

The military administrations of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger announced their immediate withdrawal from ECOWAS in January, citing sovereignty concerns and alleging that ECOWAS posed a threat to its member states.

Despite this, the ECOWAS Commission stated that it had not been formally notified of the withdrawal by the three countries and emphasized their importance within the community.

Regarding the potential consequences of withdrawal on security, trade, and socio-economic activities, Tchiani expressed confidence, stating that in today’s interconnected world, nations can thrive independently.
