Abuja DisCo Issues 10-Day To 16 Govs Of Lagos, Kano, Zamfara Others Over ₦5.2bn Debt

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) has issued a 10-day ultimatum to the governors of Lagos, Zamfara, Kano, and 13 other states to pay their outstanding electricity charges debt totaling ₦5,214,240,490 or face disconnection.

The AEDC disclosed this in a disconnection notice released on Monday, warning that failure to clear the debts would result in the governors’ electricity supply being disconnected.

The company also threatened to disconnect the electricity supply of the Presidential Villa in Abuja and several Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) over a total debt of ₦47.1 billion, with the Presidential Villa alone owing ₦923,873,150.

In the notice, the AEDC listed the outstanding electricity debts of government MDAs as of December 2023 and gave them until February 28, 2024, to settle their debts or face disconnection.

The AEDC emphasized that the publication of the unpaid electricity bills became necessary as previous attempts to recover the debts had not been successful.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) disclosed that the liaison office of Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago owes N3,448,373,803, while the office of Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo owes N1,363,506,200, and the office of Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule owes N348,826,457 in outstanding electricity debt.

Additionally, the Abuja liaison office of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara owes N15,044,211, the office of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf owes N10,496,127, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang owes N7,140,524, and Katsina State Governor Dikko Umar Radda owes N3,262,384. Moreover, the office of Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki owes N2,830,306, and the office of Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani owes N2,412,512.

Furthermore, the office of Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo owes N2,195,068, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu owes N1,624,936, and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun owes N1,506,933. Also, the office of Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa owes N1,431,020 in outstanding electricity debt.

Among others, the office of Bayelsa State Governor Duoye Diri owes N1,381,451, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori owes N1,318,099, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal owes N1,195,835, and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah owes N1,056,836 in outstanding electricity charges in Abuja.
