In a heated session on Wednesday, February 21, the Senate fervently appealed to the federal government, citing ongoing hardships, to refrain from removing the electricity subsidy.
The Senate’s decision stemmed from a motion presented during plenary, championed by Senator Aminu Iya Abbas (PDP) representing Adamawa Central zone, advocating for the continuation of the subsidy in light of current challenges.
Last week, the federal government, through Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, acknowledged the difficulty in sustaining the electricity subsidy and emphasized the necessity to transition to a more sustainable tariff model.
Adelabu disclosed the country’s staggering debt of N1.3 trillion to electricity-generating companies and $1.3 billion owed to gas companies.
