Customs Warns Against Resale of Seized Food Items, Distributes Today

Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller General of Customs, has announced that the distribution of seized food items is set to begin on Friday, emphasizing that the items are not for resale.

Speaking to reporters in Lagos on Thursday, Adeniyi cautioned against any attempt by customs officers to participate in the distribution process. He revealed that the rice would be packaged in 25kg bags, priced at N10,000 each.

The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) previously stated its intention to directly distribute seized food items to the public, as disclosed by Abdullahi Maiwada, the National Public Relations Officer, in a statement released on Tuesday.

Adeniyi outlined the eligibility criteria, stating that individuals must provide a Nigerian Identification Number to qualify. He specified that the target beneficiaries include artisans, teachers, nurses, religious organizations, and others within the operational areas of the customs.

Emphasizing the importance of preventing exploitation of the initiative, Adeniyi urged beneficiaries not to engage in reselling the distributed items. He warned against any form of profiteering and encouraged Nigerians to report any misuse or unauthorized resale of the food items.

Asserting the commitment of the NCS to transparency and accountability, Adeniyi declared that decisive action would be taken against those found violating the terms of the program.

Regarding the duration of the exercise, Adeniyi stated that it would be a temporary measure for disposing of seized food items, emphasizing the NCS’s role in safeguarding society by ensuring access to essential food items.

Highlighting the impact of smuggling on food security, Adeniyi revealed the extent of seized items, including assorted grains, dried fish, pepper, tomatoes, cooking oil, macaroni, salt, sugar, and garri. He underscored the need to address challenges within the economy and prevent further strain on productive capacity.
