The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the arrest of 48 students and two others from Kwara State University (KWASU) on charges related to internet fraud. The agency’s Ilorin Zonal Command personnel executed the arrests, following days of surveillance and intelligence gathering on the suspects’ alleged involvement in cybercrime activities. The operation, conducted on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, led to the apprehension of the suspects at their various hideouts.
Among the items recovered from the suspects were nine exotic cars, twenty-four laptops, and an assortment of mobile phones. The EFCC stated that the suspects will face legal proceedings once investigations are concluded, with plans for their arraignment in court.
Earlier reports by SaharaReporters had highlighted the invasion of private hostels at KWASU by EFCC operatives, leading to the apprehension of numerous students suspected of cybercrime. The operation, conducted in Malete, Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State, was met with resistance during a subsequent raid on off-campus hostels. This resistance reportedly escalated, prompting EFCC operatives, alongside personnel from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the police, to employ force, including gunfire and tear gas.
According to sources within the university, some students sustained injuries during the altercation and required medical attention. The incident underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat cybercrime, albeit raising concerns about the methods employed and the safety of individuals involved.
