Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, has called on the Nigeria Labour Congress to cancel its upcoming nationwide protest.
The NLC had announced plans for a protest on February 27 and 28 to address the country’s economic challenges, following a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government.
However, in a letter dated February 23, 2024, addressed to Femi Falana, the NLC’s counsel, Fagbemi pointed out a court order restraining the union from engaging in any industrial action.
Fagbemi emphasized that the planned protest was linked to issues already before the National Industrial Court, making it a violation of the court’s injunction.
He also highlighted the government’s efforts to meet the demands of the union, as outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding.
Fagbemi urged the NLC to refrain from the protest, which he deemed counterproductive to the ongoing negotiations and potentially disruptive to public services and safety.
