Economic Hardship: Falana Defends NLC’s Right to Protest

Femi Falana (SAN), the counsel for the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has stated that the upcoming nationwide protest organized by the NLC is not a contemptuous act.

He argued that the Federal Government’s threat of contempt against the NLC for organizing a protest on February 27 and 28, 2024, to protest the rising cost of living, is contradictory and inconsistent.

Falana emphasized that the NLC’s proposed protest does not violate the National Industrial Court’s ex parte orders.

In a letter addressed to the Minister of Justice and the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), Falana highlighted the history of the case, including the withdrawal of contempt proceedings against the NLC and TUC for a previous protest on August 2, 2023.

He also mentioned the challenges to the jurisdiction of the National Industrial Court and the NLC’s adherence to court orders.

Falana advised the NLC to proceed with the protest peacefully and called on the AGF to ensure adequate security for the protesters.
