16 Lawmakers Suspended Amid Impeachment Bid Against Zamfara Speaker

Seven members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly wielded their authority on Monday, suspending sixteen colleagues who were allegedly spearheading a move to impeach Speaker Bilyaminu Moriki.

The suspension was triggered by accusations leveled against the sixteen lawmakers, suggesting they unlawfully accessed the offices of the clerk and sergeant at arms, resulting in damage to property within the assembly complex.

Under the firm leadership of Speaker Moriki, the House swiftly invalidated the legitimacy of a legislative session convened by the eighteen members the previous Thursday, branding it as unauthorized. They also appealed to the people of Zamfara State to dismiss rumors circulating about the suspension of Speaker Moriki.

Amidst the chaos, fingers were pointed at external political influences, with lawmakers implicating them in fomenting unrest aimed at destabilizing Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration, especially amidst the persistent security challenges posed by banditry in the state.

Last Thursday marked a pivotal moment as eighteen members, led by a self-declared “Speaker Pro-Tempo,” suspended Moriki citing his prolonged absence from the state amidst the escalating threat of bandit activities.
