In response to the escalating economic challenges gripping the nation, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has urged the Federal Government to swiftly initiate the importation of essential food items to alleviate the burden of soaring food prices nationwide.
Addressing the press during a conference on Monday, February 26, 2024, in Abuja, TUC President Festus Osifo expressed deep concern over the unprecedented level of hardship experienced by Nigerians, surpassing even the trials of past military administrations. He attributed these woes to the government’s inadequate support for locally made products and services, alongside a dearth of capable leadership.
Osifo emphasized the imperative of immediate action, stating, “Nigerians must see the light at the end of the tunnel before the efficacy of government policies can be truly appreciated. While striving for food sufficiency domestically remains a national aspiration, a temporary relaxation of this goal is warranted. It is crucial for governments at all levels to promptly procure ample quantities of food from international sources and distribute them among the vulnerable populace.”
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, Osifo urged President Bola Tinubu to bolster his administration’s economic management team without delay. He stressed the need to transcend political and tribal affiliations in the pursuit of talent, advocating for the recruitment of exceptional individuals globally to devise indigenous solutions to the prevailing hardship.
