Breaking: Police deploy Anti-riot squad as NLC holds protests today

In response to the Nigeria Labour Congress’ (NLC) scheduled nationwide protests addressing economic hardship, the Nigeria Police Force has taken preemptive measures by deploying anti-riot operatives to strategic locations across the country. This deployment comes amidst heightened tensions surrounding the planned demonstrations, which aim to raise awareness of the prevailing economic challenges facing the nation.

The force spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed on Monday that police personnel are on red alert at key positions in anticipation of the protests. This proactive stance underscores the authorities’ commitment to maintaining public order and safeguarding against potential disturbances.

While the Presidency and Police headquarters had cautioned against the protests, citing concerns over potential disruptions, NLC President Joe Ajaero remained steadfast in affirming the union’s intent to proceed with the demonstrations. Ajaero emphasized the urgency of addressing the economic crisis and honoring agreements reached with the government, particularly in light of recent fuel subsidy removals and ongoing social unrest.

The protests come on the heels of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government to address the widespread economic challenges facing citizens.
