Anambra State witnesses a surge of discontent as members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) voice their grievances regarding the nation’s economic challenges.
Led by chairman Humphrey Nwafor, NLC members congregate at Awka, the state capital, to protest the prevailing economic difficulties.
On Tuesday, demonstrators amassed at the Aroma Roundabout before marching towards the Government House gate in Awka.
In solidarity, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), under the leadership of Prof. Kingsley Ubaoji, joined the protest.
Addressing the crowd, Nwafor emphasized the intolerable burden placed on workers and citizens by the economic downturn, calling for a review of salaries to a minimum of N1.2 million.
He also urged Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo to reinstate the suspended N12,000 wage award.
ASUU’s Ubaoji appealed to Soludo to address the deteriorating conditions at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, stressing the urgent need for infrastructure improvements.
Security personnel, including police and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, were present to ensure the safety of protesters and prevent any disruptions by miscreants.
