Petition Targets Defence Chief and Bello Matawalle Over Alleged Bias

The Coalition of Public Interests Lawyers and Advocates (COPA) has lodged a petition with Major General Parker, the Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI), decrying alleged tribalism, nepotism, and violation of the Federal Character Principle in the appointment of Navy Captain S. K Ogogo (NN/2122) as the Director of Finance and Accounting (DFA) at the Defense Intelligence Agency.

In the petition addressed to the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, COPA expressed deep concern over what it perceives as favoritism towards kinsmen by General Parker, breaching principles of fairness and equity in the agency’s operations. The group urged the defence minister to swiftly investigate the matter and take decisive action to rectify the situation.

COPA emphasized the need for appointments within the DIA to be merit-based and adhere strictly to federal character principles rather than personal or tribal affiliations. The coalition highlighted the appointment of the DFA from the same local government area as the CDI, raising significant concerns about the disregard for Federal Character principles, which could perpetuate corruption, nepotism, and inefficiency within the agency.

The petition underscored the importance of maintaining integrity and transparency in government agencies, particularly amidst efforts to stabilize the nation’s economy and address security challenges. COPA urged the minister to prioritize the investigation and ensure corrective measures are promptly implemented to uphold the credibility of the Nigerian military and government institutions.
