Ajaero Asserts: NLC Cannot Be Forced to Collaborate with Other Unions

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero emphasized that the NLC cannot be forced to collaborate with other organizations in the fight for workers’ welfare. Ajaero stated that the decision to organize a two-day protest against the escalating cost of living was made by the NLC’s highest body, its National Executive Council (NEC).

He explained that rather than partnering with certain organizations and potentially stifling its members, the NLC chose to operate independently to ensure its members’ well-being.

Ajaero was responding to inquiries about why the Trade Union Congress (TUC) did not participate in the recent protest against the rising cost of living and worsening insecurity.

The NLC had called for a nationwide protest on February 27 and 28 to protest the economic challenges Nigerians have faced since the removal of petrol subsidies in May 2023.

The protesters began their march from the Labour House in Abuja, with similar rallies taking place in state capitals nationwide.

Following its NEC meeting, the NLC announced the suspension of the second day of the protest, citing the achievement of its objectives on the first day.

However, the TUC, which did not join the protest, accused Ajaero of making decisions unilaterally.

In response, Ajaero reiterated the NLC’s independence, stating that decisions are made by the NEC, the organization’s highest decision-making body. He emphasized that the NLC’s actions are based on the NEC’s directives and not on individual agendas.
