Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has criticized former President Muhammadu Buhari, holding him responsible for the current economic challenges in Nigeria.
During an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Sani expressed his views, stating that President Bola Tinubu’s implementation of certain economic policies, which has exacerbated the economic situation, should have been done by Buhari.
According to Sani, Buhari’s failure to implement these policies led to the deterioration of the economy. He accused the Buhari administration of destroying the Nigerian economy fundamentally.
Sani also defended Tinubu, stating that Tinubu was transparent about his intentions to remove subsidies during his campaign, and Nigerians voted for him with that understanding. He suggested that the current hardships are a result of past mistakes and failures to act.
Recently, protests have erupted in some states over economic hardships, particularly due to Tinubu’s policies such as the removal of petrol subsidies and the unification of the forex rate. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has also participated in nationwide protests.
Sani acknowledged the right of the NLC to protest but cautioned against potential protests by unorganized civil society groups.
