FG Summons Electric Distribution Companies Over Deteriorating Power Supply

The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has called for a meeting with the chief executives of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company to address the escalating power supply issues in their respective regions.

Also summoned is the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, Sule Abdulazeez, to discuss the declining power situation nationwide since the beginning of the year.

The power supply situation has worsened across the country since January, partly due to the over $1bn debt owed to gas producers who supply gas for thermal gas-fired power plants.

Additionally, vandalism of transmission towers in various parts of the country has led to grid disturbances and frequent drops in electricity transmission.

Expressing concern over the situation, Adelabu has directed the CEOs of the Discos and TCN to attend a meeting next week to find lasting solutions to the worsening electricity supply.

The minister emphasized that non-performing Discos will be queried, and severe punishment or license revocation may follow if necessary.

Furthermore, TCN has been instructed to immediately begin repair works on damaged transmission towers and power lines to improve supply in affected regions.

Adelabu has previously conducted supervisory visits to power generating plants and assured them of the government’s plans to settle outstanding debts to improve generation levels nationwide.
