Security Concerns: VC Calls on FG to Allocate Funds for Fencing BUK

During the 38th convocation ceremony at Bayero University in Kano State, Prof. Sagir Abbas, the Vice-Chancellor, urged the Federal Government to release funds allocated for the fencing of the institution due to prevailing security concerns.

Abbas stressed the importance of this funding, highlighting that while there was an initial allocation in the 2023 Federal Budget, it was subsequently removed in 2024, leaving the university vulnerable.

“With nearly 50,000 staff and students on our New Campus, the absence of perimeter fencing poses a significant security risk. We implore the Federal Government to reinstate the budgetary provision to safeguard lives and property,” Abbas emphasized.

He outlined the proactive measures taken by the university, including the deployment of military personnel, Nigeria Hunters, and Forestry Security Services to enhance security, particularly at night.

Abbas also noted the challenges posed by the lack of perimeter fencing on the New Campus, underscoring the urgent need for government intervention.

In addition to addressing security concerns, the convocation ceremony saw the conferral of honorary degrees on Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and African Development Bank President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina for their notable contributions to national development and community support.

The ceremony celebrated the achievements of 180 First Class Honors graduates, 370 PhD recipients, and 3,770 Master’s degree holders, alongside 11,284 Bachelor’s degree recipients across various faculties and departments.
