Amidst a surge in food prices, Ukraine has extended a helping hand to Nigeria by donating 25,000 tonnes of wheat as emergency food aid. This assistance aims to support 1.3 million vulnerable individuals affected by crises in northeastern Nigeria.
The donation, facilitated through the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), is part of Ukraine’s “Grain from Ukraine” initiative spearheaded by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The shipment was made possible through a collaborative effort involving the UK, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Luxembourg, Norway, the Republic of Korea, and Sweden, who transported the grains from Ukraine to Nigeria.
The UK, one of the contributing countries, emphasized the importance of supporting vulnerable populations during these challenging times. The donation is expected to help alleviate the impact of rising food insecurity in Nigeria, exacerbated by conflict and regional instability.
Cynthia Rowe, the Development Director at the British High Commission, highlighted the severe challenges faced by millions of people in northeastern Nigeria due to deadly conflicts and persistent violence. The situation has led to disruptions in agriculture and livelihoods production, further exacerbating food insecurity in the region.
Rowe also noted the recent spike in prices of staple foods in Nigeria, which have risen above pre-harvest levels, making it difficult for vulnerable families to access food. The donation is a crucial step in addressing these challenges and providing essential support to those in need.
