Why NLC protest achieved nothing’ – Minister

Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has expressed skepticism about the recent protest led by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) against the escalating cost of living, dismissing it as a mere distraction that yielded no substantial outcome. Speaking at a press conference held in Abuja on Monday, Kennedy-Ohanenye emphasized the need for “constructive ways” to address the country’s challenges.

“Considering the recent protest by the NLC, what tangible results have they achieved? It’s merely a diversion for the federal government, but the actions we take, particularly by the Integrity Brigade, will yield significant impact,” remarked the minister. “Actions without tangible outcomes serve no purpose. Let’s focus on constructive approaches to problem-solving by clearly articulating our objectives.”

Kennedy-Ohanenye revealed plans for the unveiling of “PBAT Cares for Nigerian Women” later in the week, a presidential initiative aimed at empowering women across the country. Additionally, she announced the establishment of the “Integrity Brigade,” a body tasked with ensuring that funds allocated by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for women and children are utilized for their intended purpose.

“The president has endorsed the establishment of a mobile court to address minor cases of violence against women and children,” Kennedy-Ohanenye disclosed. “Of utmost importance is the Integrity Brigade, which will include volunteers from various sectors, including our traditional and religious leaders. This brigade will ensure that any decision made concerning Nigeria prioritizes the welfare of Nigerians. Even NGOs seeking support for Nigerians must demonstrate a commitment to sustainable empowerment initiatives,” she concluded.
