Lagos Govt increases scholarships to ₦225,000 and Bursaries to ₦60,000

In a recent announcement, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has revealed plans to raise the scholarship and bursary amounts for tertiary students of Lagos State origin. The new rates will be ₦225,000 for scholarships and ₦60,000 for bursaries, up from the current ₦200,000 and ₦50,000, respectively.

Moreover, the governor disclosed additional scholarships for economically disadvantaged and physically challenged students in public tertiary institutions. Notably, these scholarships will not be restricted to Lagos indigenes alone.

Furthermore, Governor Sanwo-Olu appointed four former student union leaders as Senior Special Assistants (SSAs), namely Eniola Opeyemi, Kayode Samuel, Giwa Moore, and Adeola Adewunmi.

The governor made these announcements during a day-long interactive session with student union leaders and stakeholders in Lagos State, organized by the Ministry of Tertiary Education under the theme: “Students as Strategic Partners in the Governance Process: Challenges and Prospects for Youth Development.”

The event, attended by members of the state executive council, education stakeholders, and representatives from 13 public tertiary institutions including LASU, UNILAG, LASUSTECH, LASUED, and YABATECH, aimed to foster constructive engagement with students and enhance infrastructure in public institutions.

Governor Sanwo-Olu reiterated his administration’s commitment to youth development, social inclusion, and gender equality, aligning with the THEMES+ agenda. He emphasized the importance of collaboration to establish a robust ecosystem for a solid student-university-government relationship.

In closing, Commissioner for Tertiary Education Tolani Sule commended Governor Sanwo-Olu’s support and pledged to uphold the legacy of excellence through continuous dialogue and engagement with students, school management, and stakeholders to promote peace and development.
