Northwest NLC Advocates For ₦485,000 Minimum Wage

During the North West Public hearing on the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano, the Nigeria Labour Congress proposed a new minimum wage of N485,000.

Kabir Inuwa, the Kano State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, presented the proposal on behalf of the North West Leadership of the Congress, emphasizing the necessity of the new minimum wage to reflect the cost of living and ensure a decent standard of living for workers.

Inuwa stated that the proposed minimum wage of N485,000 per month should be determined through a comprehensive assessment of the current economic conditions, inflation rates, and the basic needs of workers and their families. He also stressed the importance of regular reviews of the minimum wage every two years to ensure it remains relevant and responsive to economic changes.

Inuwa called for the intervention of the Federal Government to ensure compliance with the minimum wage law, suggesting that all allocations to any State or public institutions that contravened the law should be withheld.

The absence of Governors from the Northwest Zone at the public hearing was noted, with only Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, sending representation, while the host governor was represented by his deputy, Abdulssalam Gwarzo.
