Minimum Wage: Align Salaries with Cost of Living, NLC impulses FG

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) continues to advocate for a living wage for workers across the nation, emphasizing the need for salaries and wages to reflect the current cost of living.

During the 11th Quadrennial Delegates Conference of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria on Friday, March 8, in Abuja, NLC President Joe Ajaero reiterated this call.

At a public hearing for the North Central, NLC proposed N709,000 as the new national minimum wage, while the Trade Union Congress (TUC) suggested N447,000.

With the current minimum wage of N30,000 set to expire in April, Ajaero expressed concern over the economic hardship faced by workers, stressing that many have been forced to resort to desperate measures such as raiding food trucks and warehouses.

He urged the government to prioritize the well-being of Nigerians, warning that failure to address the growing hunger crisis could lead to further unrest.

Meanwhile, Minister of Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, assured of the government’s commitment to affordable healthcare and improved welfare for health workers.

Acting National President of the Medical and Health Workers Union, Kabiru Minjibir, highlighted the adverse effects of the removal of fuel subsidy, warning of potential social unrest if urgent action is not taken.
