President Bola Tinubu has instructed the Nigerian Customs Service to return all seized grains to their rightful owners for resale in Nigerian markets, according to the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
Speaking during a stakeholder meeting in Kwangwalam, a border town in Katsina State, the CGC stated that this directive aims to ensure ample availability of affordable food for the populace.
However, the return of confiscated food items is contingent upon their sale within Nigerian markets, as emphasized by the CGC. Tinubu views this initiative as crucial for promoting food security and combating hunger nationwide.
Highlighting the impact of seized exports on domestic food supply, the CGC revealed that over 120 trucks of food items destined for export were confiscated. He anticipates that restocking Nigerian markets will alleviate price pressures on essential food items.
In addition to his engagements in Katsina State, the CGC visited former President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura and was honored with the traditional title of Mabudin Hausa by the emir of Daura, Dr Umar Farouq Umar.
