Suspended Zamfara Lawmakers Take Legal Action Against Speaker, Others

Eight suspended members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have filed a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Gusau, contesting the violation of their constitutional rights, including liberty, fair hearing, and property rights without due process.

The suit names seven respondents, including the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Abdulaziz Sani (SAN), and the embattled Speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Bilyaminu Moriki.

The lawmakers’ counsel, Ibrahim Alli, stated that his clients alleged collusion between the speaker and law enforcement agencies to arrest and prosecute them following a disputed assembly session on February 22, 2024.

Although scheduled for hearing on Monday, the court faced challenges in serving some respondents, including the police and the Department of State Service (DSS).

Ibrahim Alli requested a postponement to ensure all respondents were properly served, a request granted by Presiding Judge Justice Aminu Bappa, who rescheduled the case for April 29th, 2024.
