Economic hardship: Tinubu’s govt begins distribution of grains to states

In response to the economic challenges stemming from the removal of fuel subsidies and other economic policies, President Bola Tinubu’s administration has initiated the distribution of grains to states across Nigeria, aiming to alleviate hardship for citizens. This development was revealed by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, during his appearance before lawmakers at the National Assembly on Tuesday.

Invited by lawmakers, led by Senator Saliu Mustapha, the minister briefed Nigerians on the government’s plans to address rising food costs and ensure accessibility for the poor and vulnerable segments of society. Kyari disclosed that the Federal Government had commenced the distribution of 42,000 metric tonnes of assorted grains to designated focal points in state capitals nationwide.

“We have received directive and approval from Mr. President to distribute for immediate impact 42,000 metric tonnes of assorted grains free of charge to the Nigerian population,” Kyari stated. While acknowledging the necessity of discreet movements due to risks of foodstuff vandalism, he assured that many states had already begun receiving their allocated grains. Additionally, the government plans to release 58,500 metric tons of milled rice from mega rice millers into the market to stabilize prices.

The minister emphasized the government’s proactive stance to alleviate Nigerians’ hardships and expressed confidence that these efforts would soon yield positive results. Collaborating with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and other national security agencies, Kyari’s ministry is addressing challenges related to the protection of food warehouses from vandalism.

Senator Mustapha, expressing satisfaction with the government’s interventions, highlighted the importance of timely implementation. “From our interactive session, we are fully in the picture of what is happening. We are convinced that the steps being taken by the Federal Government are in the right direction,” he affirmed. Through this collaborative approach, he expressed optimism that Nigerians would experience improved food security in the near future.
