Motorcycle Riders Protest Deadly Shooting Over ₦200 Ticket Dispute in Gusau

Motorcycle riders, commonly known as “kabu kabu” operators in Gusau, staged a protest following the tragic death of one of their members allegedly shot over a dispute concerning a 200 naira ticket fee.

During the protest, motorcycle riders expressed their grievances, claiming that security forces responded with excessive force, including the use of tear gas, despite their peaceful demonstration.

According to one protester, they face unfair practices in ticket pricing, with tickets sold for 50 naira in the morning but escalating to 200 naira by 2 o’clock. This inconsistency in pricing, coupled with fluctuating customer demand throughout the day, adds financial strain to their livelihoods. They also lamented the lack of government support in addressing their concerns, citing a deterioration in their treatment compared to previous years.

The incident leading to the protest resulted in the unfortunate death of a business partner, allegedly at the hands of security forces. The deceased’s body is reportedly in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Basiru Abdullahi, a representative of the motorcycle riders, emphasized their desire for peace as they seek redress from the government. He highlighted their demand for the ticketing system to revert to internal revenue management rather than being under union control.

Another protester expressed concerns about their safety, noting that despite their attempts to engage with the government, security forces continue to disregard their grievances, leaving them feeling vulnerable and unrecognized.
