Yesterday, the Senate passed a crucial bill aimed at establishing the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Trust Fund.
This bill is designed to create a sustainable financial source for the NYSC, focusing on skills acquisition, training, and empowerment of corps members, as well as the development of camps and facilities.
Spearheaded by Chairman of the Senate Committee on Youth and Sports, Adeyemi Adaramodu (APC, Ekiti South), the bill received bipartisan support during its second reading.
Adaramodu emphasized the necessity of this bill, stressing its potential to enhance the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programs, thereby improving the lives of corps members and addressing their welfare concerns.
He highlighted the historical significance, noting that after 51 years since its establishment in May 1973, this bill represents the first substantial effort to amend the NYSC Act to better serve Nigerians.
Adaramodu also credited various stakeholders, including state governments, the Federal Capital Territory Administration, and civil society organizations (CSOs), for their contributions in conceptualizing and supporting the establishment of the NYSC Trust Fund.
