Tinubu Imposes Ban on Foreign Trips for Matawalle, Wike, Keyamo Others

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a directive banning all foreign trips by Nigerian Ministers and other government officials under his administration.

The order, outlined in a letter signed by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, and addressed to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, aims to curb the escalating cost of foreign travel expenses amid Nigeria’s challenging economic conditions.

The ban, effective from April 1, 2024, will last for an initial period of 90 days and can only be lifted for trips deemed “absolutely necessary.”

President Tinubu expressed concern over the excessive spending on international travel by government officials, emphasizing the need for fiscal responsibility and efficient service delivery.

In the letter, President Tinubu highlighted the importance of officials focusing on their core responsibilities to enhance service delivery.

He emphasized that all requests for exemptions from the ban must be submitted and approved by the presidency at least two weeks before the planned trip.

The directive underscores Tinubu’s commitment to reducing governance costs and ensuring prudent management of public funds. The temporary ban on foreign trips reflects the administration’s determination to prioritize essential government functions while navigating Nigeria’s economic challenges.
