Nasir el-Rufai, former Kaduna State Governor and prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), has raised eyebrows by attending a significant gathering with leaders of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
The emergence of images and videos from this meeting has ignited discussions about el-Rufai’s potential political ambitions.
Reports indicate that the former Kaduna Governor participated in discussions at Senator Abubakar Gada’s residence in Abuja, alongside SDP chairman Shehu Musa Gabam and other influential party members.
Sources familiar with the situation revealed that el-Rufai’s unexpected visit to the opposition party’s headquarters was intended to strengthen his political ties ahead of the 2027 elections.
It’s suggested that el-Rufai, a prominent APC member, engaged in consultations with the SDP’s National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, during this visit.
Recent claims by Daniel Bwala, a former spokesperson for the Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign Organisation, allege that Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, may be considering a switch to the SDP. Obi’s purported move follows internal strife within the Labour Party, with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) reportedly seeking control.
Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State, joined the Labour Party in May 2023 after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Bwala, a PDP member who now supports President Bola Tinubu of the APC, shared on social media: “Peter Obi allegedly planning to align with el-Rufai in the Social Democratic Party as the Nigeria Labour Congress prepares to assert control over their political party, the Nigeria Labour Party. Twist and turns ahead.”
