Chaos Erupts: Kebbi Locals Storm Govt Warehouses, Abscond with Food Items

Amid escalating hardship and a worsening cost of living crisis, residents of Kebbi State took matters into their own hands, targeting both government and private warehouses to secure food items. The incident, which occurred at the Bayan Kara area of Birnin Kebbi, saw looters overpowering security personnel to plunder food supplies.

Reports indicate that the looting spree extended to private warehouses and shops in the vicinity, with even a faulty truck carrying assorted grains falling victim to the raid.

Muhammadu Gwadangwaji, Chairman of the food vendors association at Bayan Kara Market, confirmed the upheaval, noting the destruction of shops and warehouses by rampaging youths.

In response, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Nasir Idris, Ahmed Idris, expressed dismay, labeling the incident as “unfortunate.” He highlighted the targeted food items as part of the state government’s efforts to distribute provisions worth over N5 billion to alleviate the populace’s plight.

Idris condemned the looting, emphasizing that the stolen goods were intended for the welfare of Kebbi residents. He lamented the unprecedented nature of the event, stressing its detrimental impact on the state’s humanitarian efforts.
