Negotiations on the new minimum wage, to be announced by President Bola Tinubu on May 1, 2024, will resume in mid-April as the 37-member tripartite committee reconvenes.
Hakeem Hambali, the National Treasurer of the Nigeria Labour Congress and a committee member, revealed this in an interview in Abuja.
Hambali highlighted ongoing analysis of reports from zonal public hearings, held between March 27 and 28, 2024, across the country’s six geo-political zones.
The new wage is expected to mitigate the impact of Premium Motor Spirit subsidy removal. During the hearings, various zones proposed different wage amounts, ranging from ₦485,000 to ₦850,000.
Hambali emphasized the compilation and analysis of zonal reports, with the next committee meeting scheduled for mid-April.
The committee was established by Vice President Kashim Shettima on January 30, 2024, to recommend a new national minimum wage, as the current ₦30,000 wage expires in March 2024.
